The Best Dog Beds of 2026

Trainer-Approved Picks for Every dog, age & sleep style

If there’s one thing I’ve learned as a certified dog trainer, a pet lifestyle expert, and someone who spends most of her life surrounded by dogs…a good dog bed matters.

And over the past few years, dog-bed design has evolved. We now have orthopedic foams that actually make a difference in joint health, fabrics that look great in your home and hold up to muddy paws, and portable travel mats that let your dog stay comfy anywhere.

This updated guide includes the beds I’ve loved for years plus new favorites we’re using in 2025 — including Lambwolf Collective, Back on Track, and a few hidden gems you’ve probably never heard of but absolutely should.

Let’s dive in….

What to Look for in a Good Dog Bed

Whether you’re buying your first dog bed or upgrading one you already love, here are the key things to look for:

1. Orthopedic or Pressure-Relief Support

This is especially important for senior dogs, large breeds, and dogs with arthritis or joint issues. An orthopedic bed distributes their weight in a way that reduces pressure and pain — which can genuinely improve mobility and sleep quality.

2. Removable, Washable Covers

Non-negotiable to me. Between muddy paws, drool, shedding, accidents, dog puke cause that happens, and life… beds get dirty fast. Choose one with a cover that zips off and washes easily. Waterproof liners are a huge bonus.

3. Real Durability

Look for high-quality foams, tear-resistant fabrics, and stitching that doesn’t fall apart after a season of use. If your dog is still young and occasionally destructive, steer toward tougher fabrics. I rather invest a tiny bit more for a bed that lasts years instead of one I need to swap out again in less than a year.

4. Match the Bed to Your Dog’s Sleep Style

Every dog sleeps differently, so their bed should reflect that. Watch the position your dog naturally sleeps in the most.

  • Curled up sleepers: donut or bolstered beds
  • Stretched out sleepers: flat orthopedic mattresses
  • Dogs who run warm: cooling gel or breathable fabrics
  • Anxious or snuggly dogs: nesting or cave/burrow beds

Observing how your dog naturally sleeps will tell you a lot.

5. Your Lifestyle Matters too

Do you travel? Camp? Have multiple dogs? Live somewhere warm?
Beds exist now for literally every scenario — and I included my favorite travel-ready and climate-friendly options below.

Back on Track Dog Bed Back on Track Dog Bed

If you know Maggie and Rossi… you know we LIVE in Back on Track. Their dog bed uses FAR-infrared technology to support circulation and reduce stiffness — something I’ve personally seen help both senior dogs and canine athletes.

The Back on Track beds are therapeutic orthopedic-style beds designed to support comfort, recovery, and mobility for dogs of all ages. Many of their beds feature Welltex® technology, a fabric infused with ceramic particles that reflects body heat as far infrared energy to help promote circulation, soothe sore muscles, and support joint health. They’re especially popular for senior dogs, sport dogs, and active dogs needing extra recovery support. The beds are designed with supportive cushioning, cozy bolsters, removable washable covers, and non-slip bottoms for everyday practicality and comfort.

Perfect for: senior dogs, sport dogs (FastCAT, agility, etc.), dogs recovering from injury, or any pup who sleeps a little stiff.

Classic but amazing dog beds

Our favorite
MAATIN - Lambwolf Dog bed MAATIN - Lambwolf Dog bed
5.0
$130 (+10% off)

One of our absolute favorite beds, after our house burned down this was the first bed we had to get (we now have 4!)

2-4" off the ground making it perfect for all ages

Pros:
  • 100% machine washable
  • Showerproof keeping most liquids off and not soaking in
  • Great for dogs that run hot - my dog Rossi runs really hot and this is his go to dog bed
  • Stands up to his digging, spinning and antics
Cons:
  • If you have an XL breed they most likely do not have one that fits your pup unfortunately.
PLAY Pet Beds PLAY Pet Beds
4.6
$89 plus 15% off

For the dogs that love to stretch out I love these beds from Pet Play. There is a liner in these that keeps the filler evenly distributed over times (and after washes) which is honestly one of my favorite features. While with other dog beds there becomes a clear shift of the filler towards one end of the bed and makes them not as appealing but also not providing as much support for our pets.

Their beds are known for soft furniture-grade fabrics, recycled PlanetFill® stuffing made from recycled plastic bottles, machine washable covers, and modern designs that blend into home décor. They prioritize comfort, durability, and sustainability.Machine washable and dryer friendly, made in the USA and with eco-filler. We love how these looks and how they last in our home. Not to mention Pet PLAY donates a bed to a shelter pet in need for each purchase.

Pros:
  • Ours has held up great for years
  • Easy to wash
  • Comes in various sizes including ones that fit large breeds
Cons:
  • The smallest size is still quite large, if you have tiny dogs it's probably not the best option.
Newton Orthopedic Pet Bed Newton Orthopedic Pet Bed
4.6
$112.99

My senior dog loves bolsters to rest her head on so this is the one I just got her and so far it's hodling up great. If you have a really tiny senior dog the step up may be too hard/high for them.

Pros:
  • Washable Bed
  • Orthopedic
  • Removable & Breathable Dog Bed Cover
  • Temperature-regulating, breathable fabric
Cons:
  • High step up which might be harder for small dogs with arthritis.

How Often Should You Replace a Dog Bed?

Most dog beds last 1–3 years, but high-quality orthopedic beds can last much, much longer.
Replace or refresh when:

  • The foam starts to flatten
  • There’s a smell you can’t get out
  • Your dog avoids it (a sign it’s uncomfortable)

And if your senior dog starts waking up stiff? Time for an upgrade.

Final Thoughts: No one bed fits every dog

The best bed is the one your dog actually uses.
Some dogs want firm support. Some want to burrow. Some want a flat mat they can sprawl across. Some want the softest, coziest faux-fur cloud imaginable.

My advice?
Watch how your dog naturally sleeps and choose a bed that supports that.
And don’t be afraid to have multiple beds in different rooms — dogs benefit from choice just as much as we do.
