Cooling Options for Dogs: the best items to keep your dog cool

My dog, Rossi, runs really hot. He seeks out cooler floors vs a dog bed, stars panting after cuddling and is generally a hot dog. I understand how unfortunately it can be to hot, I have a vascular problem myself and often am hot and uncomfortable. Luckily, there is a lot of options out there to help out pets (and ourselves too), but in this we will be focusing on the dogs that run hot.

I live in Southern California where most of the year it’s pretty warm, which isn’t something to complain about, unless you’re a dog that’s hot.

As the temperatures rise, our pets can feel the heat just as much as we do. Keeping your dog cool and comfortable during hot weather is essential for their health and well-being. Fortunately, there are several cooling options available that can help your dog beat the heat in style. In this blog post, we’ll explore some of the best cooling products for dogs, from cooling jackets to mats and more.

While while we won’t be focusing on food in the blog article, there is such a thing as cooling and warming proteins, these terms are used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) to describe the energy of foods. It’s said to be believed that a dog that runs hot should be fed cooling proteins and a dog that runs cold be fed warming proteins. Some examples of cooling proteins are  rabbit, duck, and cod, these are also great options for a dog that has allergies.

As a reminder if walking your dogs in hot temperatures, be sure the ground isn’t too hot and if so booties may be required. Dogs do sweat from their feet so you don’t want to keep dog shoes on constantly during the heat.

Pro Tip: You can also add a few frozen blueberries or slices of cucumber to your dog’s water bowl for an extra cooling boost!

1. Cooling Jackets that keep dogs cool

What are they?
Cooling jackets are designed to keep your dog cool by using evaporative cooling technology. These jackets are made from lightweight, breathable materials that retain water and slowly release it through evaporation, helping to lower your dog’s body temperature.

Why choose a cooling jacket?
Cooling jackets are ideal for outdoor activities like hiking, walking, or playing fetch on a hot day. I also use these when my dog is simply spending itme with me outdoors on a wam day, such as at a horse show or pet event. They are easy to use and come in various sizes to fit different breeds. Plus, many brands often feature reflective strips for added visibility during warm evening walks.

2. Cooling Mats and beds that stay cool for dogs

What are they?
Cooling mats are portable pads filled often with a cooling gel or water that absorbs heat from your dog’s body. These mats are perfect for providing instant relief from the heat, whether your dog is lounging indoors or outdoors. The majority of these mats need no water and no effort from you and are pressure activated. No matter the brand these generally last 1-2 years till they need to be replaced.

Now, our top choice is a bit different in that it has a sleeve that does need to be refridgerated. I find a massive difference between the CoolerDog Hydro mat (linked below) one and all other brands – also if you have a Gunner kennel they fit really well.

If you want a general mat, just at tip check out TJ Maxx or Home Goods at the beginning of summer for a major price reduction on these.

Why choose a cooling mat?
Cooling mats are versatile and can be used anywhere your dog likes to relax, such as their bed, crate, or the floor. They are easy to clean and often foldable for convenient storage and travel.

Cooling bandanas are stylish accessories that can help keep your dog’s neck cool during hot weather. They are made from moisture-wicking fabrics that retain water and provide a cooling sensation as it evaporates.
